We spoke to one of the most experienced wedding photographers in Surrey, Jay Rowden to get some insight into what makes a good wedding photographer.

Now, a good Surrey wedding photographer should also have a good eye - you'll need to see examples of his work to see if his style suites you. They should be able to look at a scene and pick out the right bits to make a great photograph. Ideally, you will someone with flair and panache.

I think this is important and some good wedding photographers do get this for their clients but in a way that intrudes on the atmosphere. A good wedding photographer should blend in to the crowd, almost as if he were one of the guests at the Church along with everyone else.

Some wedding photographers have the fight flair but this can lead them to push their way in to intimate moments when they should step back. You don't want them to intrude or get in the way. I like to try and be one of the crowd - that doesn't mean I consider myself one of the guests - but I like to be unobtrusive.

I would expect a good photographer to be upfront and tell you if he feels he cannot deliver what the bride and groom wants. I would rather point out any issues upfront. I also go through the day to make sure I can get all of the pictures required.

The best wedding photographers in Surrey should be happy to show you examples of real photos they have taken of real weddings. If they are new to wedding photography then they should have a VERY impressive portfolio of work, ideally of people.

Look at their photos and then ask yourself: Do you feel that you were there? Were you emotionally moved by the pictures? Before you pay a deposit, make sure you meet up with the photographer in order that you see their work in the flesh. Was the presentation and print quality to the standard that you are happy with?

You should also look at the quality of the wedding album itself and ask when you can expect the pictures. Too quickly is a sign of poorer quality. About 6 weeks is normal if they are actually putting a lot of work into putting a great album together.
